hate to not support the band but gee, can't they release something I haven't had in many different forms since the very first days of my tape collection ( yeah that's right TAPE although I only go as far back as cassettes not reel to reel ha ). I'd probably still buy it spur of the moment if i saw it in the store but mail order is very doubtful.

I say this every time but here is what will get my money no questions asked - any vintage video - that 6-21-71 France footage, SSDD ( which i have but would buy the pro release ), and what the heck is up with not releasing ALL of the Winterland 74 footage? And why is only Lovelight on the Woodstock release? I know the rest is out there, I've seen it on You Tube.

Seems you are more interested in video at this point. I am not a big fan of watching concerts. I made several attempts at watching the Grateful Dead Movie and then the Rockin' the Cradle DVD and fell asleep each time. I can do other things (like work or drive!!) while listening to show but video requires undivided attention and I guess whenever I can find time for that, its pretty late and I never can stay up or something.

I don't actually watch video that much for the same reasons as you - I'm interested in things that I not only don't already have but things I haven't seen or heard. I'm interested in the vintage stuff - like that 6-21-71 show which I had NO idea even existed until a couple of years ago. I like to see the band in their prime. I was thrilled when Festival Express came out. And Rockin the Cradle kind of puts me to sleep too.

I guess the bottom line is I think the band has blown the majority of their market with me. I already have tons and there are tons and have been tons of shows out there for a long time. Raising a family it's hard for me to justify spending the $ on a show I already have and have heard a million times. If that sounds ungrateful ( no pun intended ) then so be it, but I'd buy a ticket to go see any of their current projects live if they were playing in my town.

Copenhagen 72 which I think was filmed for TV is such good quality (sound and picture)it's ridiculous that it hasn't been put out on DVD. Again it's all over Youtube. Are there copyright issues ?

When will people notice that RT releases are not distributed by Rhino and do not have the word Rhino anywhere on them? Until someone comes up with evidence to the contrary, I think we have to assume that any profits generated from them go to GDP and hence to the boys. Rhino does distribute and put their name on other releases, like Cow Palace 1976. They presumably get the profits from those releases.

I noticed that some of the releases i have purchased have a rhino label on them and others like Road Trips don't although they say "manufactured and distributed on behalf of Grateful Dead Productions." Not sure if that means rhino is still pulling the strings or not but it kind of feels like some of those Japanese beers like Kirin that are being made at the same places they make Budweiser in LA.

that's funny! That's how I roll with a handful of bands that I respect enough to buy even without listening to - Wilco, Ween, Los Lobos - but those bands are putting out new stuff.

Hey if I had nothing else to spend money on or was loaded I'd definitely buy everything too. I'd love to collect posters too but those are out of my price range now.

I'm in the minority here, but 5-15 just doesn't have that spark imo. Shows like 5-02, 5-07, and 5-14 feature tighter playing. And a June '70 surprise would have had me typing in that credit card # a lot quicker.

Maybe 5-15 just needs another listen though. 4 discs from 1970 for $23 is a nice release, and I'll support the cause.

And I won't complain after the brilliant fall 71 Road Trips, which has turned into a top 3 or 4 release for me.

5-15 wouldn't have been my first choice either--not because I have SBDs but because as you say some of the performances lack spark. But I've been so looking forward to commercial releases of 1970 acoustic material, and the acoustic material in these shows is generally quite good, IIRC, that I'm still delighted to see this release.

Once again GDP/Rhino have succeeded in chopping up an epic performance (even if it's only a handfull of tracks) that rightfully deserved to be released in its entirety!

I am thrilled with more acoustic music from 1970 (and the bonus disc as well) and Ive already placed my order, but I would have glady ponied up for a multi-disc boxed set of the complete early and late? sets from this legendary performance(s).

And how cool would that have been with the New Riders sets included (particularly the three songs with Weir sitting in)?

Gotta be happy enough though, it could have been a show from 1984...

Yeah, it's cut up, that bummed me out a little. To their credit, they did augment the set by one disc more than usual and so were able to include many more songs than they would have, but they should have turned it into the full show. With the bonus disc it'll be close to the complete experience, and luckily those of us who already have the tape can splice in the remaining missing songs.

It would be awesome if the NRPS set were included, but that would be a monster package, hard to justify from a moneymaking perspective I suppose. Also perhaps it's a difficult thing to do, copyright-wise... not that I have any idea what I'm talking about. Anyway, I'm praying the St. Stephen is here in its entirety, it would make the purchase doubly worth it for me...

Yeah. Awesome. Say goodbye to 5/15/70 on this site. Publish a portion and pull-down the remainder from LMA. Woo-f*cking-hoo. Thanks fellas.

Of course I already have a lossless copy, but it's a shame that this show will not be available(here at LMA) to future listeners.

Good point!

Better grab this before it goes away! Even if you are ordering!

The tracks not included are certainly worth having, even though most are repeated during the late set:

Friend of the Devil
Candyman (x2)
Cumberland Blues
Cold Jordan
Easy Wind
Attics of My Life

Sadly the dynamite New Riders sets will likely go away as well. So grab these, at least for the gems Mama Tried, Sawmill and and Me and My Uncle with Weir sitting in!

Kindof a shame they didn't include Attics.

Also, apparently the currently circulating versions are all missing Deep Elem from the late show. I never knew that. Dunno if it's enough to convince people to spend 20 something bucks for a 3 minute tune they didn't already have on their circulating copy, but it's worth mentioning.

I too wonder about that cut in St. Stephen. I'm sure it's probably covered. It seems to me that that is a big deciding factor in what they release. It seems that if there is a cut and they can't cleverly disguise it, they usually don't release it (or go the partial route). Though I was REALLY surprised when they released parts of 8/6/74 (of course, "parts," never complete, an argument that both sides have valid points, but personally I'm in the "release complete shows" camp) that they actually used an AUD patch. That's the only case of them doing that that I can think of.

That was a big bummer for me with the "Other One" bonus track from 9/3/72 that was on the 9/21/72 Dick's Pick. There is something like 1:12 missing, and they just cleverly smoothed it over, you wouldn't even notice if you didn't know it was there. I may be nitpicking, but that 1:12 was actually one of my favorite parts of the jam, Bobby plays these really cool chords that are burned into my memory.

I like to support the band and all, but between the "hidden" costs of collecting music like internet, blanks, electricity, etc, I don't think I will buy this one. The Dark Star is good but otherwise these aren't shows I listen to very much. They're ok, but not something I'd get all hot and bothered about an official release like I did with 2/14/68 or something.

I think they've used AUD patches occasionally before....the 7-31-71 Dark Star for instance, and wasn't there one for the 10-21-78 Stella as well? (But yes, sometimes they do 'snips' too, especially in the early DPs.)

Anyway, I believe 5-15-70 is one of those dates which have TWO sources - the Dead have their own tapes, and the Fillmore crew was also secretly taping. I think the secret Fillmore reels are the ones that circulated. So (aside from the missing songs) there shouldn't be any cuts.

I dunno, I don't remember an aud patch on the 7/31 Dark Star, I'll have to pull that one out. You're probably right.

I did not get any of the official releases of the October 78 shows, couldn't tell ya about that.

Oh yeah, I forgot, the circulating 5/15/70 is from different, non-vault reels. Are they the same mix, I wonder? Same feed, different deck?

I keep meaning to see if the patch was covered in the PITBand from the new patched version of Miller's 12/19/73 (the first example of a "snip" on an official release, perhaps? there are others but I can't think of them now). We were all so focused on the missing bass solo that I think we all forgot about the reel flip in Playin'. In both cases, from listening to the DP I had no clue there was anything missing. It was only a couple years ago when I first heard the aud that I noticed the missing bass solo and patched it in myself.

Have any shows with guest artists other than Cippolina been released commercially? I've always assumed there would be sticky rights issues that it wasn't worth their trouble to deal with, when there are so many other recordings worth releasing.

Let's hope so. The 5-2-70 set is there so it wouldn't be unprecedented.

On a completely different note, have you checked out the listening party for RT3-3? Maybe its me but it sounds like crap!! I hope this is some issue of low bit rate streaming.

As for releasing this show as a boxed set, there are so many other boxed sets I would rather see (the French '72 shows, Winterland '74 to name a few) so I am fine with a 3+ release of this, as long as it sounds better than what I hear on that listening party.

When you have gigs upon gigs of GD music and little disposable income, it's tough to justify the expense. Hell, with the existence of this archive and it's wealth of top-notch recordings it's tough to justify spending any money on music. I'll pay to see it live. Period. I'm often enticed to see a band live by way of free music on the web. That's the reality that the recording industry must deal with.

P.S. - The last album which moved me to the point I felt behooved to purchase the CD at full-price was Tom Russell's Hotwalker. And I usually buy a CD when I see a band I like at a bluegrass festival or local joint. $15 bucks for the touring band is always do-able. $25 for something I already have is a little insane.

Just one man's opinion.

Well it is a shame that it won't be available here but based on that logic i guess they should never release anything, right? I guess those folks will only have 1500 other shows fall in love with. I would start with 5-1-70, it is a better acoustic set and if they really love it perhaps they will be inspired to purchase DP8 or RT3-3.

I only buy a very few official releases anymore, but this is one of the exceptional cases where I'm going to shell out and hope for the best. 1970 is my favorite year, and although I've long had a copy of this show, I'm counting on a sonic upgrade. Plus, with the bonus disc I can justify the cost- 4 discs for under $25 ain't too shabby (better than ninety or a hundred fucking dollars for a nine disc box set!). I know some people have issues with this or that song being left off, but I think this is a great choice.
